The integration of gerontologists into the Mexican labor system

The accelerated demographic aging in Mexico has increased the demand for professionals trained in gerontology. This article analyzes the role of gerontology graduates in the Mexican healthcare system, highlighting their academic training, professional functions, and current challenges in labor market integration. It reviews the educational programs offered by public universities in Mexico and compares the professional field with international contexts, underscoring differences in occupational recognition and integration into healthcare structures. The findings reveal that despite the growing need for specialists in aging, gerontologists in Mexico face limited inclusion in institutional frameworks and public health policies. The article emphasizes the importance of incorporating gerontologists not only in elder care but also in preventive health strategies targeting younger populations. It concludes that formal recognition and structured inclusion of gerontologists are essential to ensure a sustainable and proactive response to population aging in Mexico
