Individuals engaged in discrediting behavior (i.e., male street prostitution), but who are not yet discredited, employ strategies to prevent others from learning about their involvement. Since their behavior makes them vulnerable to severe legal consequences and can damage their self‐concept, they strongly avoid discreditation. This research, using the negotiations that transpire between the hustler and customer as they seek to arrange a sexual transaction, highlights the strategies used by male street hustlers to cover their involvement in street prostitution
