Investigating the impact of in-house foreign domestic workers on L2 development of public-school children in Hong Kong

Research has presented evidence demonstrating the impact of English-speaking in-house foreign domestic workers (FDWs) on second language (L2) proficiency and development of children. The present study examined the influence of various factors on the acquisition of receptive and productive skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with two tests being administered before and after among 135 Chinese students (N = 35 with FDWs; N = 100 without FDWs) from four different classes from Grade 3 at a public English-medium instruction (EMI) primary school in Hong Kong. A longitudinal study that spanned one academic year was conducted. Results revealed that the positive influence of children’s language proficiency in listening and speaking was substantial in the households employing FDWs, but no significant differences were observed in reading and writing skills. Meanwhile, a subsequent survey analysis corroborated the hypothesis that the English level and age of FDWs exerted the most significant influence on children’s English language proficiency, in conjunction with other contributing factors. These findings demonstrated the effects of FDWs, highlighting their pivotal role in facilitating L2 through phonological awareness and interactions with parents, alongside home literacy environment exposure and the influence of parental involvement on children’s cognitive and linguistic abilities related to L2 language proficiency
