Joseph Schumpeter (1883–1950) is well known to sociologists and political scientists for his account of the potential metamorphosis of a capitalist economy into a socialist one and in particular for his explanation of the respective roles entrepreneurship and democratic politics will play in this process. As a professional economist, however, Schumpeter was also concerned to differentiate between the nature of explanation provided by pure economic analysis and the explanations of general economic phenomena given by non-specialist economists, whether they be sociologists, historians or whatever. This distinction also becomes an integral part of his account of social change as the relationship between economic analysis and political ideology evolves in the twentieth century. But in order to avoid purely methodological controversies, Schumpeter shows how both layman and professional economist fail to understand the role of specialised economic knowledge in the transition from capitalism to socialism and in doing so provides a new interpretation of the relationship bewteen economy and society
