When chitchat fosters trust
Phatic communication and personal connections facilitate patient trust in China through patient-centered communication

In China, patient trust has been declining in recent decades. Patient-centered communication (PCC) has been found to be effective in fostering patient trust. Although scholars have identified multiple ways to improve PCC, prior research has paid little attention to the potential of phatic communication between patients and healthcare providers. Applying interaction ritual theory (IRT), this study aimed to examine the mediated effect of patient–provider phatic communication on patient trust in the medical system through PCC and patient trust in healthcare providers, as well as the moderating role of patients’ personal connections with healthcare providers. Through a survey based on quota sampling in China (N = 4,453), this study revealed that patient–provider phatic communication could facilitate patient trust in the medical system through the serial mediation of PCC and patient trust in healthcare providers. The beneficial effect of patient–provider phatic communication on PCC was stronger among patients who had more personal connections with healthcare providers. This study extends patient–provider relationship research by exploring the favorable effect of off-topic daily communication on relationships and trust in medical contexts
