Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics is inconceivable without considering his interpretation and reappropriation of the Platonic dialogues. In this paper I would like to examine Gadamer's relation to Platonic thought, first, by focusing on his work as an interpreter and, second, by attending to Gadamerian appropriation of Plato for his hermeneutic philosophy. With respect to the former, I will try to show that Gadamer’s interpretation involves two operations: first, to Socratize Plato and, second, to Aristotelize him. It is possible to recognize the centrality of this first operation already in Gadamer's early texts, while the “aristotelization” is promoted especially after the publication of Truth and Method. On the other hand, with respect to Gadamer's own philosophy, I will present four central aspects for hermeneutics that are based on Platonic thought: the conception of hermeneutics as dialogue, its practical orientation, the dialectical character of language, and the hermeneutic openness to transcendence based on the Platonic conception of the beauty. Finally, in the concluding section I will consider the possible interactions between Gadamerian interpretation and reappropriation of Plato, and I will present some implications of the ‘dialogue’ between Gadamer and Plato for Platonic studies as well as for Gadamerian and hermeneutic studies
