Although conventional accounts suggest that the Victoria and Albert Museum’s (V&A) transatlantic connections waned before the twentieth century, scholars Anthony Burton and Tim Barringer have argued that its post-World War II gallery redevelopment emulated the modernist ‘white cube’—a minimalist, ahistorical display aesthetic—associated with the Museum of Modern Art. While this view has rested largely on visual analysis, this article re-examines it through underexplored primary sources, photographs, and comparative case studies. Focusing on the V&A’s South Court and adjacent galleries (1949–1957), the article reconsiders how the museum combined visitor-centred display strategies with stylistic surface treatments to create a modern appearance that concealed its Victorian decorative interiors. Re-examining this approach alongside the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s post-war gallery redevelopment, the article argues that both museums pursued forms of modernisation more attuned to contemporary technologies, curatorial practices, and public needs than MoMA’s pre-war, static white cube model. By reframing the V&A’s transformation as part of a wider field of transatlantic experiments, this study challenges linear narratives of museum modernisation and offers a new perspective on mid-twentieth century institutional modernity
