The role of the city as the center of culture diffusion is illustrated by the case of radio ownership. The percentages of families with radios in the counties of a metropolitan region tend to follow regular downward gradients from the urban center to the limits of the region. Such diffusion gradients occur because the residents of each unit of a region of metropolitan influence have culture contacts with the urban center of diffusion in inverse ratio to the time-and-convenience distance from the city. Culture traits which are not affected by wide variations of adaptability within the units of the region will tend to follow such gradients
