The various groups composing Chicago's population have followed definite patterns of succession in their movements through the city. Back of these changes there has been a common process at work, involving successive stages of invasion, conflict, recession, and reorganization. Measurement of the distribution and movement of the chief groups shows that their location is related to their length of residence and to their assimilation into the general life of the city
