Folk and 'Feudal' Societies

This article challenges the prevailing evolutionary typology that distinguishes between "folk" and "feudal" societies, arguing that these categories are not mutually exclusive and often overlap. Sjoberg examines the characteristics typically associated with each type, such as kinship structure, economic organization, and political authority. He demonstrates that many societies exhibit features of both "folk" and "feudal" systems, suggesting a more complex and nuanced understanding of societal development. He proposes a more refined classification based on the degree of societal complexity and the nature of the power structure, rather than a rigid dichotomy. The article concludes that a more accurate approach would involve analyzing the specific characteristics of each society and recognizing the potential for hybrid forms
