Alfred L. Kroeber was the leading American anthropologist of his generation. Widely regarded as the successor to his mentor, Franz Boas, he dominated the discipline during the first half of the twentieth century. As the first professor and curator of anthropology at the University of California, he was the founder of the scholarly study of California Indians. Kroeber was also known for his contributions to culture theory
