In this reflective narrative, a PhD graduate draws from philosophy and personal experiences to frame an axiological position on postgraduate supervision. Research on axiology, subjectivism, hermeneutic phenomenology, and social-cultural theory is reflected upon through the literature. Key reflections suggest that supervisors, students, and universities work together to cultivate a research culture that aligns with ethical value judgements. Universities must encourage critical engagement in postgraduate discourse while navigating Sustainable Development Goal 4 and generative artificial intelligence.
