Community analysis in the planning and implementation of the Stockholm cancer prevention program

Community analysis has been the method of choice in the planning and implementation of a number of international health education action programs. Success for such programs requires information about community inhabitants, the community's needs and resources. Community analysis offers an opportunity for involvement at an early stage and paves the way for the participation of key persons and organizations in the community. The Stockholm Cancer Prevention Program has as its goal the reduction of the incidence and mortality rates from cancer for the 1.6 million inhabitants of Stockholm county by influencing risk factors associated with lifestyle patterns. The intervention .strategy for improvement of dietary patterns and reduction in the use of tobacco is based on knowledge from the community analysis conducted between 1985 and 1987. This, in turn, is based on interviews with key people, surveys and analyses of various organizational documents. Results from this analysis laid the ground work for our intervention. Two parallel but complementary strategies have taken form and have been utilized as a result of the analysis. One encompasses organizations in the county and the other focuses on specific geographical areas. The use of the community analysis method can facilitate the long term maintenance of the program.
