This chapter is focused on the historic Palestinian town of Lydda, which was more recently renamed Lod. It explores the cultural value that the town had prior to the Palestinians being driven out in 1948, drawing on the distinction between living and embedded culture and iconic and dead culture. It then investigates the obligations owed in the light of that culture by those who came to occupy the town after 1948—especially Moroccan Jews. It argues that they had obligations to respect that culture, but that the proper way to do this was to engage with Palestinians in the development of the town.
