Military Technology and Warfare

The military technology of Byzantium played a major role in the evolution of the defensive and offensive techniques common to the western Eurasian world. In the later fifth and sixth centuries, those who made up the first and second ranks in the Byzantine infantry were the ones who primarily wore the full defensive panoply. To protect themselves against the enemy, soldiers used breastplates, helmets, leg-armors, and wide round or oval shields. They relied on spears and swords as their main offensive weapons.
