Adam

Adam sero-converted 2 years before our interview, at the age of 54. He has encountered stigma because of his sexual orientation, HIV status, and his older age—old age in the eyes of gay male culture. Yet, he is optimistic and good-humored, deeply religious, in good health, very physically fit, and secure financially. Age is only a number for him. “I see myself as being and acting somewhat younger than the rest of my 56 year old peers.” On the surface, Adam, a white man, is a prototype of the “healthy aging” discourse, but the nuances of his past and his current life reveal what this discourse hides.
