C. Wright Mills (1916–1962) was a leading critic of postwar America and one of the most controversial figures in social science. He contended that, in US society, production, administration, and violence were becoming centralized within the economic, political, and military bureaucracies of power. These bureaucracies of power were governed by a “power elite.” Mills showed how increased bureaucratization and centralization molded the new white‐collar workers who worked in the big organizations of business and government. Mills saw it as the intellectuals' moral imperative to set forth general and detailed programs on how to attain the properly developing society. In order to do this, intellectuals must have a commitment to act in a morally responsible manner. For Mills, the first step toward practicing a politics of responsibility begins with the cultivation of the “sociological imagination.” Mills's main concern was to utilize sociologically informed reason in the pursuit of a more humane and rational society.
