The Phillips Curve describes the relationship between inflation and unemployment, which forms the basis of contemporary monetary policy. Current economic thinking assumes that it works only in the short term and expectations are an important part of the theory. Sociological thinking about this trade‐off has emphasized the current causes of structural unemployment as well as the institutional factors that can reduce the pain for the unemployed. Current research findings indicate that the standard formula should take into consideration the kinds of institutional differences studied by sociologists.
