The Inner Border as Networked Commons

After unraveling the digital border’s territorial manifestations at Europe’s outer and inner border in Chapters 1 and 2, Chapter 3 analyzes the incompleteness and fragility of the digital border. With an empirical focus on the metropoles of Athens, Berlin, and London, this chapter shows how the digital border is contested through the emergence of differential and uneven networked commons in the city. Networked commons, we argue, are unstable but lively collectivities of communication, collaboration, and self-expression between urban citizens and noncitizens that challenge the normative contours of the border and open up spaces for alternative imaginaries of migration beyond the dominant regimes of humanitarian and entrepreneurial security.
