As questions go, it was a reasonably difficult one. But, nonetheless, you were expecting the student you asked to be able to answer it. After a few seconds they haven&s;t said anything. Not “I don&s;t know” or “can you repeat the question?”. After 10 seconds the silence is starting to become slightly uncomfortable. Did they hear you say their name? Why aren&s;t they answering you?
