William Scott Ferguson (1895–1954) used an observation made as a graduate student to develop a sounder chronology of the Athenian democracy, a more satisfactory picture of Hellenistic Athens, and a positive vision of the Hellenistic period. He directed the dissertations of important ancient historians and reformed Harvard's tenure system to maintain its academic position after World War II.
