Factio , in Roman usage, is ordinarily a pejorative word referring to political cooperation aimed at unsavory purposes. It is never used by the Romans in referring neutrally to any recognized political alliance which engaged in an appropriate contest for leadership in the state. Modern historians of Rome not infrequently employ the word otherwise, as if factio were a Latin equivalent of faction .
