In the US presidential debates have become an expected feature of general election presidential campaigns. Begun in the 1960 campaign that featured incumbent vice president Richard Nixon and Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy, debates did not reappear until 1976 when incumbent president Gerald Ford challenged front runner, Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, to join him in these nationally televised events. Since then presidential debates have occurred every four years. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
