This chapter examines the place of psalms in public worship, the style and standard of public praise, and popular attitudes to the psalms amongst the laity. It describes the strategies for reform devised by various reformers, the impact these had upon congregational praise, and the tensions within Presbyterianism that were brought to the surface as a result of attempts to change this central component of Presbyterian self-identity.
