Decurions ( decuriones or curiales ) were the members of local assemblies ( ordo decurionum or curia ) who ruled the cities of the Roman Empire with municipal status. Membership into the ordo was regularly decided by local magistrates, taking into account various, albeit vaguely defined, criteria, such as wealth, reputation, service, and ancestry. In practice, it was an almost hereditary position within the most prominent local families, although access to the order was never completely closed to new families. Whereas freedmen were forbidden from joining the ranks of the decurions, their descendents could eventually be admitted to the ordo .
