E. O. Wilson's Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975) and Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene (1976) marked a paradigm shift in behavioral biology and the social sciences. Sociobiology made the gene the basic unit of natural selection and “kin selection” or nepotism between close relatives the main source of sociality. It offered an elegant model for explaining both the similarities and the differences in the entire range of animal societies, from invertebrates to Homo sapiens . Its acceptance in the human behavioral sciences was reluctant and gradual, but it has now made substantial inroads in psychology, anthropology, and to a lesser degree sociology, political science, economics, and demography.
