In Cyprus as elsewhere, nationalism was a modern phenomenon. But it was also one underpinned by social boundaries rooted in premodern times. Sometimes slow‐moving and other times abrupt, social boundary formation and transformation through the centuries endowed modern Cyprus with two groups of people who were thinking of themselves as Greek and Turkish, respectively. This, together with the existence of two mother countries and a colonial power, provided a mix conducive to nationalist projects and conflict.
