Racial dynamics in Brazil are shifting. Once considered a racial democracy, or a context in which the pernicious effects of race had no place, today this society has begun to officially recognize and challenge racial inequality. Part of this process involves a move away from celebrating traditional racial ambiguity to embracing racial definition: the mixed‐race term moreno has fallen out of favor in many spheres, and the racially affirmative term negro has taken center stage. Most significantly, race‐targeted affirmative action policy has been instituted across the country and in various institutions, perhaps most importantly in higher education. The motor behind these shifting dynamics appears to be the coming together of state and social movement actors for strategizing and enacting racially affirmative approaches for greater social equality. At the same time, public opinion research suggests that the majority of Brazilians support this new direction.
