Faïence, more correctly termed “Egyptian faïence,” is a non‐clay ceramic material made up of silica and covered with an alkaline glaze, most commonly in a blue or blue‐green color. It is known from the Egyptian Predynastic period through Roman times and has continued into modern times in parts of the Near East (for summaries, see Vandiver 1983; Nicholson and Peltenburg 2000).
