Volume 1 of this Handbook provides comprehensive reviews of a number of key research areas in the study of substance use and substance use disorders. Chapters in this volume cover the historical and cultural contexts of substance use and its consequences, its epidemiology and course, etiological processes from the perspective of neuropharmacology, genetics, personality, development, motivation, and the interpersonal and larger social environment.
