Research into the causes of the unsatifactory educational performance of many black students has focused on linguistic and cultural differences of black students to the neglect of institutionalized racism, which must be recognized as the major factor affecting black academic achievement. Given the nature of institutionalized racism, it becomes clear that the actual academic accomplishment of black students must not be evaluated by the same criteria employed in the evaluation of the academic accomplishment of white students
