Contemporary Jews in Casablanca are facing a slow and constant process of diminution-a consequence of death and emigration (mostly to France). This process deeply influences the Jews' self-perception of their very existence in Morocco in various aspects of life. Their small number, along with the diminw tion process underline their marginality to Morocco's life. Yet, emigration also colors in a new light their feeling as a diaspora, and contradicts the "solar system model" that assumes unidirectional symbolic relationships between a singular "homeland" with its "diasporic communities. Although Jews have seen the Land of Israel as the cradle of their history, they also conceive of Morocco as a symbolic center; a homeland for those who remained behind as well as for those who migrated.
