The Black Caribs of Central America comprise more or less fifty thousand individuals, of mixed African and American Indian descent, living on the Caribbean Coast of the republics of Honduras and Guatemala, and the colony of British Honduras. This ethnic group originated in the Island of St. Vincent, one of the Lesser Antilles. The first know inhabitants of St. Vincent and other neighbor islands were supposedly called Ygneri, and were extinguished before European settlers came in (Du Tertre, 1667, II, pp. 369-70.) Archeological evidence, though scant and imperfectly analyzed, seems to indicate their culture was related to that of the Arawaks of South America
