Comprehensive studies of human relations problems at the management level are usually hampered by two sets of difficulties: first, the complexity of the role structure in modern organizations accounts for a lot of ambiguity and overlapping, making it impossible to match really comparable cases and to use rigorous methods in a meaningful way; second, the general emphasis on status and promotions gives crucial importance to the human relations game and prevents the researcher, therefore, from obtaining reliable data on the central problem of power relationships
