Several comparative studies made recently by anthropologists and sociologists have indicated a causal relationship between the sociocultural organizations of a particular society and its drinking patterns.1 In fact, Field has emphasized that sociocultural factors may be more important in the incidence, degree, and patterns of alcohol drinking than strictly psychological traits, such as levels of anxiety, tension, and the tendency toward selfdestruction.2 If drinking patterns are directly related to the sociocultural patterns of unique societies it can be expected they result from many determining traits rather than from any one universal causal factor. A comparative analysis of the various investigations cited above bears out this observation
