A necessary step in a comprehensive assessment of indigenous envenomation therapies is a framework in which seemingly disparate and fragmentary data may be grouped for comparison and analysis. In this paper data gathered in Belize in 1979-1982 is presented under topic headings which suggest parameters and problems that should be considered in a cross-cultural study of snakebite treatments. Accurate information is needed on the social history of patients, snake doctors, and others who might influence the course of treatment; beliefs about snake types and snake behavior; the circumstances of envenomation; facilities available for treatment; the stages of treatment; the components of medicines as well as their preparation and application in treatment
