these pitfalls are standard fare, covered in any basic statistics text. Avoiding them is, or should be, high on any empirical researcher's list of concerns. Unfortunately, we often ignore the problems, and their systematic neglect may have led us to misspecify the dynamics and dimensions of church growth. At the very least, we should consider the possibility that they have contaminated our results. As long as we are going to play the game of building our theoretical understandings out of statistical techniques, we must play by the rules that those techniques impose upon us and understand the limitations of studies that fail to live by those rules.1
