This article examines the complexities of cross-cousin marriage among the LoDagaa of northern Ghana. While acknowledging the formal preference for patrilateral cross-cousin marriage, the authors demonstrate that actual marriage practices often deviate from this ideal. They explore the social and economic factors influencing mate selection, including the importance of bridewealth negotiations, the availability of eligible partners, and the role of individual preferences. The study highlights the dynamic nature of kinship systems and the interplay between prescribed rules and actual behavior
