The Narrative and Counter-Narrative of the Gift

Cet article considere les definitions de questions d'identite, de choix et d'imagination morale a travers un recit melanesien sur le don et l'echange. L'essai discute aussi les scenarios structures d'echange au moyen desquels Rauto, un peuple melanesien, explore les corollaires emotionnels du don et d'acceptance du don. Une perspective nouvelle est ainsi developpee sur l'echange ceremoniel de biens, prenant en consideration les implications emotionelles du don. En montrant que l'emotion est une part integrale du don, l'article soutient le point de vue que privilegier les aspects emotionnels des phenomenes culturels nous permet d'explorer les dimensions experientielles de ces phenomenes plus pleinement que nous ne pourrions le faire autrement
