This article presents a theoretical approach linking, in a macrosociological framework, aspects of traditional family structure (as far as husband-wife interactions are concerned) with the positions of its members in the social structure. Basic elements of this approach are the comparison of structurally-defined life horizons for husband and wife, the value-producing capacity of the roles they assume, and the social-structural conditions for the fulfillment of these roles. These conditions are defined in terms of class and degree of development of the larger context. For the main types of combinations of such conditions the interests of husband and wife and ensuing conflicts (structural dissent) are deduced and their effects on the traditional family structure are discussed and illustrated by data from a study on the status of women in Switzerland
