Shaken Identities, Reserve Masculine Capital, and the Lived Experiences of Aging Men with Breast Cancer

This study explores how aging men's breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent mastectomy affect their masculine subjectivities and practices. Interviews with seventeen men (mean age 62.8) in the U.S. revealed experiences of body-self disruption and identity dilemmas. The men's identities were shaken by the diagnosis and mastectomy, leading to adjustments in their masculine expressions. Three case studies exemplify the varied experiences with non-normative bodies and the commonality of finding reserves of masculine capital to cope with the existential loneliness of a man with breast cancer
