This article is a republication of W.E.B. Du Bois's seminal 1897 article "The Study of the Negro Problems." In this work, Du Bois lays out his initial conceptualization of the field of African American studies, arguing against biological racism and emphasizing the importance of rigorous empirical research to understand the social and cultural contexts shaping Black life. He introduces the concept of "double-consciousness," the feeling of "two-ness" experienced by African Americans as both American and Black, and calls for interdisciplinary research encompassing history, sociology, economics, and politics to address the complex issues facing Black communities
