This article explores the evolving understanding and experience of illness, tracing a shift from a socially defined "sickness" to an individualized "illness." Zempléni examines how this transformation reflects broader societal changes, including the rise of individualism, medicalization, and the changing doctor-patient relationship. The author argues that while the social dimension of sickness remains important, the individual's subjective experience and interpretation of illness have gained increasing prominence.
