This article examines the Brazilian military's evolving political identity from the fall of the monarchy in 1889 to the Estado Novo dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas (1937-45). It argues that the military developed a distinct, interventionist political culture, rooted in a sense of institutional guardianship over the nation's political and social development. This culture was shaped by the military's professionalization, its involvement in internal conflicts, and its engagement with broader intellectual currents, including Positivism. The article challenges traditional interpretations that portray the military as simply reacting to civilian political crises, emphasizing instead the military's proactive role in shaping political outcomes and its internal debates about the appropriate use of its power
