This article examines the dynamic interplay between social practice and ontology in the naming and myth system of the Akwe-Xavante of central Brazil. It argues that names, by virtue of their public and performative nature, constitute a primary means by which social identities and relations are created and maintained. Furthermore, the analysis of myths reveals how these narratives provide a charter for the social order and offer a framework for understanding the Akwe-Xavante's complex relationship with their environment. The study demonstrates that naming and myth are not simply reflections of a pre-existing social reality but are actively involved in shaping and transforming it
