IMPLICIT IN THE CONCEPT of collecting folklore traditions (rather than materials) is the idea that such collecting must be done in the actual context in which such traditions exist. Antithetical to such a concept is the collecting of folklore in the artificial setting in which a folklore collector confronts his informant with a recording microphone and elicits the materials which he knows or suspects the informant has in his repertory.
