IN 1959 RICHARD M. DORSON called on folklorists to study American folklore in context of the great dramatic movements of American history,' and in a distinguished career he has continued to insist upon primary relationship between folklore and history. As director of Folklore Institute at Indiana University, as author or editor of a score of books and nearly 200 articles and essays, as supervisor of innumerable doctoral theses in folklore, he has been in a position to impress his views indelibly upon profession.2 Nevertheless, judging from published output, Dorsonian concept of importance of historical context to folkloristic studies is shared by only a tiny minority of folklorists. For most folklorists notion of historical context must be considered part of their passive repertory. This paper is about folklore and history, but I should make it clear at outset what aspects of subject it is not about.
