A Paradox of Proverb Usage

LIKE MOST TEACHERS with large introductory courses, I have tried to formulate mid-term and final examination questions that would force students to think critically about course materials while still lending themselves to machine grading. One of the strategies that appeared ideal for introductory anthropology was analogy questions, using the model of the Miller Analogy Test (Gruber 1967). Analogies can be used to display structural identities in what first appear to be very different orders of phenomena. Students were compelled to think comparatively, which is precisely what is called for with ethnographic materials. This testing procedure turned out to be a bit more comparative and complex than I had originally bargained for, however. In test after test, students would continually find a match between the A : B of the question and the X : Y in the list of possible answers that I had not intended as the correct answer. Moreover, in almost every case, students were correct in defending their choices of a proper match. For example
