This paper addresses the topic of warfare in the Caribbean between 1500 and 1840, paying special attention to the Black Caribs of St. Vincent, whose descendants, today living primarily in Central America and several urban U.S. centers, call themselves by a variant of their original name--Garifuna. It discusses the aims, goals, strategies, tactics, and armaments used in their struggles against each other and against outsiders, as well as the role played by warfare generally as their society came into contact with others after the encounter with the Old World
