The purpose of this paper is to study family in the immigrant Indian and Pakistani community of Saskatoon, Canada. First, it attempts to understand the direction and to a lesser extent the amount of family change in this immigrant community. For this purpose, in addition to our data on the immigrants, two other sets of data, one on the immigrants' family patterns and the other on the white family will be used. The former set of data will be derived from relevant studies conducted in India and Pakistan, and the latter from a cross-sectional survey of East York families. Wherever possible, the available evidence on the immigrants' backhome family will be compared with their current patterns, and the latter in turn, will be compared with the Canadian family patterns. It is hoped that this method, despite its limitations,1 would help point out the direction and the extent of familial change in this first generation of Indian and Pakistani immigrants. ♦Thanks are due to Professors S.
